Deputy Registrars

Deputy registrars work as agents of the Election Commission to register voters throughout the county. In order to become an official deputy registrar, you must be a registered voter in Nebraska and complete training conducted by the Election Commission. After completion, you will be certified by the Election Commission to conduct voter registration drives anywhere in Nebraska.

Qualifications

In order to be an official deputy registrar, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a registered voter in the State of Nebraska (you may register to vote at the deputy registrar training session, if not already registered to vote in Nebraska).
  • Must sign up for the deputy registrar training session on or before the business day prior to the training date.
  • Must complete a deputy registrar training session conducted by the Election Commission.

Training Class Dates & Times

Below is a sign up form for deputy registrar training classes. If there are no registered attendees for a training session, the session will be cancelled. All classes are conducted online via Google Meet and will last approximately one hour.

All classes will be virtual and we will send you a link along with the class materials and a Deputy Registrar Questionnaire the day before the class. This website does not have an auto response capability

Registration Drive Rules

The purpose of these drives is to register any eligible citizen who is interested in voting. Deputy Registrars are acting on behalf of the Election Commission, regardless of any other groups that individual is affiliated with. That means that eligible voters should not be influenced in any way to register for a particular political party by the Deputy Registrar. Deputy Registrars must always work with members of another political party when they are registering voters. Please also be aware of the following rules and regulations:

  • Must receive permission from the venue prior to arranging a voter registration drive.
  • Must notify Election Commission office of location and time of proposed voter registration drive at least forty-eight hours in advance. Names and party affiliations of the deputy registrars must be submitted also.
  • Election Commission office will provide a kit to be used for the registration drive. It is the deputy registrar's responsibility to pick up the kit at the Election Commission office.
  • No material advocating or advertising any political issue, candidate, or party shall be displayed or distributed within fifty feet of any voter registration site.
  • No alcohol shall be served within fifty feet of any voter registration site.
  • The completed registrations and kit must be returned to the Election Commission office no later than the end of the next business day after the registrations are taken. Registrations returned after this date will be invalid.
  • A person's voter registration record or an update of a voter registration becomes effective the day the application is delivered to the Election Commission.
  • According to state law, Deputy Registrars cannot register voters after 6:00 p.m. on the third Friday preceding any election.
